How we launched ShapeBot with Drift and the simple process we used to get initial tracking of KPIs into Google Analytics.

We took advantage of Drift’s almost-too-good-to-be-true offer for startups a few weeks back.
Our first idea for a project was to create a bot flow for our blog.
We wanted to learn more about what using Drift day-to-day would be like before we went all-in on our website.
Over a few hours, I built basic skills into our new bot friend, ShapeBot.
The goals were simple for version one. Give blog readers more ways to learn about us and make it easy to get in touch with a human if needed.
There are three core metrics Drift makes easy to track with Google Analytics:
Chat Started — # of conversations ShapeBot engages in
Email Captured — a visitor gave ShapeBot their email
Meeting Booked — a visitor booked a meeting with us through ShapeBot
We set these metrics to track as goals in Google Analytics in a few quick steps.
Connect Google Analytics to Drift
Login to Drift and Google Analytics, then go here.
If you have multiple blocks of GA code on your site, you may need to use advanced settings. Otherwise, follow the Google approval process after clicking the link above and you will be good to go.
Find Drift Data in Google Analytics
Drift default settings trigger the three core metrics as Events in Google Analytics.
You’ll find Chat Started tracking under the category Drift Widget:
Drill down into the Event Action section to find Chats Started:
Create Goals in Google Analytics Based on Drift Triggered Events
It takes an additional two minutes to set up the new events as goals in Google Analytics.
Here’s how we set it up to track Chat Started:
Drift recommends for Goal Details setting the value at greater than zero and choosing some monetary value for the event.
We chose $5 as a value for Chat Started to get rolling.
Repeat this process for Email Captured and Meeting Booked.

This basic tracking will serve you well as you work on improving your bot’s skills. You’ll be able to pickup on trends in what sources and types of posts drive the most engagement.
So far I am amazed at the engagement we saw in just the first few days.
We had a demo booked through ShapeBot with a prospect within 48 hours of launching and I get conversations passed along to me everyday from my new bot co-worker.
