We were lucky enough to get selected to be a part of Collision Conference in Vegas. So most of the SteadyBudget team road tripped it from Oregon down to Vegas to join the hundreds of other startups at a conference attended by thousands of people.
The drive was long...really long. Before we took off I looked at the Google Satellite view of our route through southeastern Oregon down through Nevada. Seemed pretty desolate. It turned out to be very desolate.
Mile after mile there was nothing. No birds, no other cars, no towns, nothing. At one point we drove for about two hours at night without seeing another light of any kind! Just a few power lines here and there, some rolling hills, few desert bushes, but nothing else. It was a unique experience, but we were happy when we made it to our rooms right off Fremont Street near the conference headquarters to rest up for the next day.
We weren't scheduled to set-up our display until Day 2. So Day 1 was our chance to really take in some of the great speakers and other companies at the conference. There were a lot of them. The venue were these two massive tents that went on for hundreds of yards and thousands of people were there.
There were some startups doing some wacky things to try to get attention. This guy spent the entire day in a bird head like a sports mascot.
I wonder if any investor has ever responded to a tactic like this. I just can't imagine one of them saying, 'I like your guts with the bird head move, smart.' I felt worse for his buddy who worked for the same app sitting next to him without the bird head, that has to be awkward.
We also experimented with a product from Eagle Energy. Each vapor pen lasts 500 puffs. The guy handed them out said that about 50 puffs would equal the amount of 'awakeness' you'd get from one cup of coffee. I felt a little jolt for sure, cool idea with the popularity of vapor pens only increasing, makes sense people would look for caffeine replacement for zero calories and sugar.
Day 2 was the big day for us. We got to the venue early and set-up our humble display.
Talking all day about what you have been working on night and day is a strange experience. During these conferences, especially with investors walking around, you repeat yourself a lot. It's important to have a rock solid elevator pitch down. It's tricky because you want to boil your company down to the simplest terms possible but also convey you have a unique point of view and solution. Here was my for the day,
We met some great people and saw lots of great startups and talks. After a day of talking we took the night to walk around old town Vegas and take in the sites. It's a truly unique place with a restaurant that offers free meals if you tip the scales at over 350 lbs. There was a scale normally used for horses out front. Only in...at least I hope only in... Vegas.
