HTTPS Gives Websites an Edge in Competitive Markets

Having HTTPS as opposed to HTTP works as a tie-breaker between sites with similar quality and search rankings. It can also give you the edge when found in competitive markets. This preference is due to the fact that Google likes the idea of sites putting in the extra effort to protect its users, but they don't expect everyone to have the resources to manage the HTTPS prefix. Not having the added security doesn't have a negative impact on rankings, but having it could be positive.
